Shamrock vs. Le - Total Performance Report
The Total Performance Ratings for each of the 10 fighters from Saturday night's card are available here. Like WEC 33, this was another night of not-terribly-close matches. The point differentials between fight winners and losers were 41, 58, 63, 82, and 100. One Cung Le note: Unlike most fighters, Cung threw more power shots to the body and legs (56 attempts) than he did to the head (45 attempts). And while Shamrock looked to be in a good deal of pain after the fight because of his wrist, he's probably sore elsewhere: Le landed 36 body shots and 15 strikes to Shamrock's legs.
WEC 33 - Total Performance Ratings
Here's the TPR Report for the televised fights Wednesday night at WEC 33. The ratings are what you'd expect for a bunch of fights that weren't particularly close. No winner had a TPR of less than 70. One interesting note: Chael Sonnen's dominant performance produced a TPR of 85, which is the highest-recorded TPR to date for a decision winner. His offensive volume score was an impressive 405 compared to a whopping 6 for Bryan Baker.
The Calm Before the Storm
We know it's been quieter than usual around here but that doesn't mean there's nothing going on. First, we've added two new fight reports, the first bout between Dan Henderson and Kazuo Misaki and the second one. All part of the Dan Henderson close-call oeuvre, along with Henderson-Bustamante, which we posted a couple of weeks ago.Second, there's a good number of events coming up and we're preparing to bring you all the stats from WEC 33, the Strikeforce/EliteXC card, and Fight Night 13. Stay tuned because there's a huge amount of great info coming your way within the span of just one week.
Volunteers...Again, But Better this Time
Our last call for volunteers went so well, we're doing it again for a different idea. Those who participate will have the chance to play with a new, one-of-a-kind feature we're working on. This is something that serious MMA fans will truly love. We're looking for at least eight volunteers, but we can accomodate more if interest is high. The last opportunity only asked for ten minutes of your time, but this one is more substantial. We're asking for about 30 minutes of your time (no, you won't be scoring fights), but in return you have the chance to win some cash and prizes. UPDATED: Thanks to all those who volunteered.
Calling Shenanigans on Chuck Norris
On the World Combat League's knockout rate:"It's the most exciting three minutes of mixed martial arts anywhere," Norris says. "The WCL had a 34-percent knockout rate, which is tops in any sport. If a fighter tries to slow the pace of the fight down, they will be penalized for passivity." Sorry, but no. The knockout rate (including KO's and TKO's) for MMA stands at 37%. That number has remained steady across thousands of bouts and over a period of eight years. For you stat geeks, the margin of error is a scant 0.54% at a 95% confidence interval. So Chuck's not probably wrong, he's definitely wrong.
TPR for Cage Rage 25
Thought it's only four fights long, we are releasing the TPR Report for the Cage Rage fights broadcast on Showtime. Does anyone know why they didn't show the Turner-Al Turk fight, as scheduled? Can anyone find video of that match online?
New Report, New Format: Hendo vs. Busta
Today marks the release of our newest fight report on the bout between Dan Henderson and Murilo Bustamante. This is the first in a series of reports on the many close decisions that have marked Henderson's career. We did an experiment a while back with the report on Griffin vs. Edgar. As opposed to all the other reports on the site, that one did not have an introduction or explanatory text on the striking and grappling pages. No one complained, which confirmed our notion that it's the numbers people are interested in, not the text. The Hendo-Busta report takes this one step further. This report eliminates the text on the decision page as well. The truth is that it's the text, not the numbers, that has kept us from releasing more of these reports. We have the data to populate dozens of reports and an automated system that can generate reports in a few minutes, but writing detailed analyses takes time. It's our intention that by reducing the amount of time necessary to create reports we can provide much more content than before. We will reserve the detailed commentary for the fights that really need it.
