Mike Goldberg: FightMetric Mouthpiece?

It's always nice when folks let us know they enjoy our stats, but an even bigger pleasure is knowing that people are using them for their own purposes. We've helped several MMA writers add color to their stories with some stats, and our in-depth fight reports are used (and mis-used) in arguments across countless forums.

Veteran UFC announcer Mike Goldberg has used some FightMetric stats on-air in the past, but no mention was more explicit than during the UFC 83 telecast. During the St. Pierre-Serra fight, Goldberg not only used several statistics we published in our article at Yahoo Sports, but immediatebly afterward, he quoted verbatim from the article, labeling St. Pierre, "maybe the best functional wrestler in MMA today."

We maintain a liberal attribution policy when it comes to quoting numbers we've made publicly available on this site or others specifically because we want to see the ideas spread even independent of the FightMetric name. Indeed, Goldberg might simply be prohibited from mentioning the name of a site or company that isn't an official UFC sponsor. But given the potential exposure, if you were faced with this situation, what would you feel more of, disappointment or pride?

Rami,

You should be proud. FightMetric provides an incredible service to the MMA community. The data you provide is often quoted in sites such as Bloody Elbow, and I always make sure to reference your posts at MMA Ratings (formerly MMA Kamander).

You guys should be proud your evidence-based Fighter statistical analyses are gaining popularity and traction but disappointed you aren't getting credit or compensation.

Fight metric is great! The UFC and other organizations should recognize ingenuity and entrepreneurship and give your company what you are due for you intellectual property.
Dana protects his brand like a lioness her cubs and strives to eliminate free riders cutting no one any slack. Its only fair to recognize value and pay for it. You guys are start up and they have the finding.
Objectivity, measured in statistical reality is what your metrics provide. The explanatory power of those measures and perhaps their predictive value will soon become central to US MMA judging.

Maybe you guys need to develop and market a live fight stat and predictor like Eddie Bravo does?
I am sure he gets paid. good luck guys

I noticed that you don't have any ads. Is that something you're interested in or do you want to stay away from that? You could probably develop other revenue
streams for your service, but if you haven't already done so, you might want to look into patenting your TPR system.
